By the time you get behind the wheel, you should already understand the vehicle’s history, servicing, condition and specification. The drive then becomes an opportunity to confirm that the car performs as expected and, just as importantly, that it suits you.
That matters even more when shopping for a used luxury or performance vehicle. Two cars that look almost identical online can have very different histories and ownership prospects.
Before you book your test drive, here are the questions worth asking.
What Is the Car’s History?

Before discussing performance or options, establish where the car has come from and how it has been maintained.
Ask how many previous owners the vehicle has had and whether there is any information available about its previous use. Then look closely at the service history.
A complete history should show a logical progression of dates and kilometres, along with where the work was completed. Servicing through an authorised dealership or recognised marque specialist can provide additional confidence, particularly on sophisticated prestige vehicles.
It is also worth asking whether the car has undergone previous accident repairs and whether documentation is available.
Finally, confirm the specification. Luxury vehicles can have extensive factory option lists, and two visually similar examples may differ considerably in equipment.

Ask whether the vehicle underwent a workshop inspection when it was acquired and what that inspection found.
Consumables are particularly important. Large wheels, performance tyres and sophisticated braking systems can make replacement costs considerably higher than those of a mainstream vehicle.
Knowing whether the tyres, brakes and scheduled servicing have recently been completed gives you a much clearer picture of the expenses likely to arise after purchase.
Questions to ask:
- Has the vehicle undergone a workshop inspection?
- Is an inspection report available?
- When was it last serviced?
- What condition are the tyres and brakes in?
- Have any components been replaced during preparation?
- Is any maintenance currently due?
- Is there anything known to require attention?
You are trying to understand the difference between a vehicle that has been properly prepared for its next owner and one that has simply been prepared for the camera.

Before driving the vehicle, establish exactly what happens after you buy it.
Depending on the age and kilometres, the car may still carry part of its original manufacturer warranty. Other vehicles may have dealer or third-party warranty options available.
Ask what applies to the specific vehicle rather than assuming that every car on the showroom floor receives the same coverage.
It is also worth asking how servicing and aftersales support are handled once you take delivery, particularly if you live interstate.
The answers help establish the ownership experience you are buying alongside the car itself.
Who Are You Buying From?
Assess the Seller Too
You are not only inspecting the car. You are also assessing the business selling it.
Ask how the vehicle was sourced and what the dealership knows about the specific model, generation and specification. A seller specialising in prestige vehicles should be able to discuss the car in considerably more detail than what appears in its online listing.
One question is particularly valuable:

An independent inspection is a normal part of purchasing a used prestige vehicle and provides another layer of confidence before committing.
You can also ask which workshops or specialists the dealership recommends for future servicing and maintenance.
What Should You Ask Before the Drive?
Set Up a Proper Test
Not every test drive provides the same opportunity to assess a vehicle.
Where possible, ask whether the car can be left cold before you arrive. Starting the engine yourself allows you to hear and observe how the vehicle behaves before it reaches operating temperature.
Ask about the test-drive route as well. A short trip around the block may tell you very little. Ideally, you want enough variety to experience the car at low speeds, over imperfect surfaces and at higher speeds where appropriate.
Before leaving, clarify how the dealership's insurance applies while you are driving and whether an excess would apply in the event of an accident.

- Can I start the vehicle from cold?
- How long can I test drive it?
- What type of roads can the test route include?
- How does insurance work during the test drive?
- Is there an applicable excess?
- Can my mechanic or specialist inspect or drive the vehicle?
Giving yourself enough time with the car makes it easier to concentrate on how it actually behaves rather than rushing through the experience.
What Should You Check During the Drive?
Confirm How It Feels
Once you are behind the wheel, your questions should turn into observations.
Start with the basics. Is the seating position comfortable? Can you see clearly around the vehicle? Does the infotainment make sense to you? Would you be comfortable using the car every day?
Then pay attention to how the vehicle behaves mechanically.
The transmission should operate smoothly, steering should feel consistent and the vehicle should track properly on a straight road. Listen for unexpected suspension noises and check for vibrations through the steering wheel or pedals.
When safe, test the brakes progressively and pay attention to any pulling, vibration or unusual noise.
Spend some of the drive with the audio switched off. A quiet cabin makes it much easier to identify noises that might otherwise disappear beneath the stereo.
Most importantly, do not allow performance to dominate the assessment. A fast car can still be the wrong car.
How Should You Assess the Answers?

Across every conversation, look for specificity.
Useful answers include dates, kilometres, workshop names, replaced components and supporting documentation. Less useful answers rely on broad statements about the car being immaculate or having been looked after.
Consider taking notes, particularly if you are comparing several vehicles. After driving two or three similar prestige cars, individual details can quickly blur together.
The goal is to make the decision using evidence rather than allowing the excitement of a good test drive to outweigh everything you learned beforehand.
